1 John 2: 18 - 21  Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared.  Thus we know this is the last hour.   But you have the anointing that comes from the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.  I write to you not because you do not know the truth  but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.

Did I make good use of this year?  Did I let anti-Christian thoughts or lies have too much power over me this year?

Action:  Resolve to be better in 2016 than you were in 2015 – for those of us who were almost perfect in 2015, it will be very difficult.

1 John 2: 12 - 17  Do not love the world or the things of the world.   If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.   For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world.  Yet the world and its enticement are passing away.  But whoever does the will of God remains forever.

 

What do I value that is of this world?  What do I have that I am just not willing to let go of?

Action:  Let go of your attachment to something of this world.

Luke 2: 22 – 35  Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.  This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

Do I know anyone like this?  Would anyone ever describe me this way?

Action:  Work on being righteous (not self-righteous) and devout.

Matthew 2: 13 – 18  The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.  Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”

Is “run away and hide” the advice I would expect from the God who sent plagues to Egypt, wiped out the Amalekites, and destroyed Jericho?  Does the birth of Jesus seem to usher in a new era in God’s dealings with his people?

Action: Make a point of doing something nice for the “innocent” people around you.

Luke 1: 67 – 79   Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:

that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.

Luke 1: 57 – 66  Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.

Do I rejoice when I see others receive mercy?  Who do I know who most needs mercy?

Action:  Get ready to rejoice with whomever you are spending Christmas.

Luke 1: 46 – 56  He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

What do I plan to do to observe the Year of Mercy?  What do I hope to get out of it? 

Action:  Show mercy for the first 3 people (and as many others as you can) who really annoy you today.

When was the last time I leaped for joy?  Is there enough joy in my life?

Action:  Plan some joy in your life.

How do my actions give my name meaning?   What do I want my name to mean?

Action:  Make a point of calling people by their names today, conscious that we are all still creating ourselves as persons.

Matthew 1: 1 – 17  The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.  … Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Christ, fourteen generations.

It was over 800 years between Abraham and Jesus, but the Gospel highlights just two; does that mean everyone else is unimportant?  Do I think Jesus regards anyone as unimportant?

Action:  Introduce yourself to and learn the names of three “unimportant” people.

Isaiah 45: 6- 45   I am the LORD, there is no other; I form the light, and create the darkness, I make well-being and create woe; I, the LORD, do all these things.

 

Does focusing on God as the creator of all help me prepare for Christmas?  Does the darkness at this time of year make me more aware of the gift of light?

 

Action:  When you light your pink candle today think about God who formed the light.

 Matthew 21: 28 – 32  Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: “What is your opinion?  A man had two sons.  He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’  The son said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards he changed his mind and went.  The man came to the other son and gave the same order.  He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go.  Which of the two did his father’s will?” 

Which son is more like me – am I the stubborn one who resists God but usually does the right thing, or the agreeable one who sometimes fails to follow through?   Is one really that much better than the other?

Action:   Work on being the third son (or maybe the daughter) who says yes cheerfully and then follows through with great energy.

Matthew 21: 23 – 27  But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet.”   So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.”

How often have I said “I don’t know.”, because I was afraid to give the real answer?  Am I willing to give an unpopular answer or opinion?

Action:  Don’t be afraid to tell the truth.

How have I learned what is good for me?  Do I let God lead me or am I on my own?

Action:  Do something for your own good this weekend.

Isaiah 41:  13- 20   I am the LORD, your God, who grasp your right hand; It is I who say to you, “Fear not, I will help you.”

Do I understand that God reached out to me before I looked for him?  Do I accept that God will help me?

Action:  It is the year of mercy – show a little mercy for someone who is often ignored; there are plenty of opportunities this time of year to buy presents for children, nursing home patients, veterans, etc.

Isaiah 40: 25 – 31  Do you not know or have you not heard? The LORD is the eternal God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint nor grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. He gives strength to the fainting; for the weak he makes vigor abound.

Does God get enough credit for being the creator of everything?  Am I willing to admit my strength comes from him and is not my own?

Action:  Do something big confident that God is giving you the strength you need.

Luke 1: 26 -38  Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

So an angel comes to Mary, tells her a wild story about what God wants from her, and she says, “Sure whatever you want.”  Would her response have been possible had she not been immaculate from the time of her conception?  Can I imagine telling God, “Sure, I will do whatever you want.”?

Action:  Imagine telling God, “Be it done to me according to your word.”, and see what scares you the most.

Thought for Monday December 7

Our God will come to save us!

Luke 5: 17 – 26  And some men brought on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set him in his presence.   But not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus.  When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “As for you, your sins are forgiven.”

For whom would I work this hard [carry on a stretcher, cut a hole in a roof, etc.]?  Does it seem strange that Jesus’ response to an act of faith is to forgive the faithful? 

Action:  Go the extra mile for someone this week.

Matthew 9: 27 – 31  As Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!”  When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?”  “Yes, Lord,” they said to him.

When I hear people pray for peace or the conversion of non-believers or a change of mind and heart for those who would do violence to another, do I believe God really can and will answer that prayer?  Is prayer my first response to evil or a last resort?

Action:  Pray for peace, conversions, and an end to violence and then do whatever else you can to help make it happen.

Isaiah 26: 1 – 6  On that day they will sing this song in the land of Judah:  “A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us.  Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith. A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you.”

What do I trust to keep my nation safe – walls or God?  Do I believe justice and faith are key to being at peace?

Action:  Pray for peace and justice and trust in God to deliver.

Matthew 15: 29 – 37  The disciples said to him, “Where could we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a crowd?”  Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?”  “Seven,” they replied, “and a few fish.”

Do I ever find myself in situations I think are too big for me?  Am I willing to give everything I have even when I don’t think it is enough?

Action:  Pick a big problem you see in the world today and make a plan to give everything you can toward solving it in the next year.

Luke 10: 21 – 24  Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “All things have been handed over to me by my Father.  No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

Can you really know Jesus if you don’t know the Father?  Can you know God the Father if you don’t know Jesus?

Action:  Remember to pray to God as Father and to Jesus as his Son.

Matthew 4: 18 – 22  As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

If Jesus walked by and saw me at my work, would he think I was prepared to do his work?  Am I willing to drop what I am doing to follow him?

Action:  Do your job as well as you can, and prepare yourself to be called to do more.

Luke 21: 29 – 33  Jesus told his disciples a parable. “Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near.

What signs of change do I see?  Am I prepared for the new season?

Action:  Get ready for Advent.

1 Corinthians 1: 3 – 9    I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What am I thankful for?  Am I thankful for the people in my life?

Action:  Be the kind of person other people are thankful to know – at least for an hour or two.

Luke 21: 12 – 19  Jesus said to the crowd: “They will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name.  It will lead to your giving testimony.”

Do I give testimony in the way I live my life?  Would it be easier to just be asked about what I believe instead of having to live it?

Action:  Keep testifying to your love for God in the way you treat people and the world around you.

Luke 21: 5 – 11  While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, “All that you see here– the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.”

Do I appreciate the beauty of the world around me?  Am I driven to make the most of being at this place, at this time in history?

Action:  If you are feeling nostalgic for other places or other times this week, think about what makes those memories so great and try to make that present where you are.

Luke 21: 1 -4  He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

Do I give (time., money, energy) from what I have or what I have left over?  Who gets the best I have to give?

Action:  Do your best this week to give “off the top” instead of just giving from your surplus.

Luke 19: 45 – 48  The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.

Doesn’t “put him to death” seem like a pretty extreme way of responding to someone you disagree with?  Am I violent about any issue?

Action:  Have a great weekend.

Luke 19: 41 – 44  As Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace–  but now it is hidden from your eyes.”

How peaceful is my city?  Do I have any idea what would make for peace in my city?

Action:  Do something to make your neighborhood a little more peaceful.

Is there anything God has given me that he wants me to keep hidden away?  Has God given me anything that I am hiding?

Action:  Invest your talents in changing the world, or at least the part of it that is around you.

Luke 19: 1 – 10  Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,  was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.  So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.

What keeps me from seeing who Jesus really is?  What am I going to do about it?

Action:  Do whatever you have to do to see Jesus.

 Luke 18: 35 – 43  He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God. When they saw this, all the people gave praise to God.

Have I seen a miracle?  What miracle would I most like to see happen?

Action:  Pray for miracles – they do happen.

Luke 17: 26- 37  So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.  On that day, someone who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them,

What is my most prized possession?  What would I risk to keep/protect it?

Action:  Make a list of all the things you want to take with you when you die and put it in a safe place.

Luke 17: 20 – 25  “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.”

If I can’t observe the kingdom of God, how am I supposed to know it is really here?  Am I often among people who give witness to the Kingdom of God?

Action:  If the people you are around do not bear witness to the Kingdom of God, find new people to be with (“with which to be” for those with grammar issues).
